Abstract:  We explore gender biases towards delegation using the dictator game. Under no gender revelation, there are no significant gender differences for principals in the standard dictator game. Under compulsory delegation and no gender revelation (Hamman et. al., 2010) male agents share little with the recipients. Female agents show little responsiveness to the incentive scheme and their decisions are driven more by fairness concerns. However, under gender revelation female principals appoint as agents those who show less concern about fairness. Contrarily, as agents’ females show more fairness concerns than their male counterparts. This creates a negative reputation for them resulting in principals delegating more to males over time. We observe a clear dichotomy in females’ behavior. As principals, females behave similarly to males. However, as a delegating agent they show more concerns about fairness, even if it is detrimental to their own benefit.
